The United States offers significant employee protection laws i.e. minimum wage OSHA FMLA child labor laws overtime laws etc. However by requiring employers to comply with these laws greatly increases the costs of doing business. Many say that the increase costs on employers makes the country less competitive on the international stage to countries that do not offer such protections. What do you think?

I Think that US companies that operate sweatshops overseas and get tax breaks for it should be forced to comply with US labor laws.

Minimum wage hurts a handful of small businesses but it really is a tiny fraction. Most businesses must pay substantially higher in order to attract and hold on to workers. But there really does need to be a bottom or too many businesses would pay slave wages.

OSHA Do you really want to work someplace where the management wants to decide what is safe and what is not? Business has probably saved far more money in lost time and injury than what it has cost them to comply with OSHA rules

FMLA Life happens and we are talking about unpaid leave. There is a cost in temporary replacements but there is a huge benefit in the business to keep experienced workers. Most folks could not afford to take the time available to them under the act so doubt this one hits business very hard.

Child Labor? Please if a business is actually hurt by child labor laws they should probably not be in business

Overtime laws: Without it companies would require their workers to work far more hours or lose their jobs. Many employees are happy to work the extra hours for the extra pay so you would deny labor the ability to be rewarded for hard work while preserving it for the business owner?

Its true that we can no longer compete with labor intensive lowskill manufacturing with most developing countries but that has very little to do with employment law and everything to do with the high standard of living in the US. No one in the US would work for a factory that paid fifty cents an hour even if it were legal.
